17 Jan Q&A for Loving at The Writers Guild
As Martin Scorsese correctly called it, this film is “delicate”. The writer and director Jeff Nichols wrote this as a first draft and didn’t alter anything. He is the same age as me and as I look at my career over the last year as well as the past 20 years and then at his career over the last decade it’s interesting to see how two paths but with the same end goal can lead two people to a different place. I will have completed more feature films than he has by the end of 2017 however he is working with much bigger names and is up for amazing awards. That is his Hollywood. My Hollywood is just as amazing but with different awards and smaller names but with just as much talent. The one element though that I noticed when he was being interviewed was how humble he was and self deprecating. He spoke very openly about the fact he knows he makes films not everyone likes and that most people think they should be 10 minutes shorter than they are. However I love the fact he goes with his gut, he has supportive people around him and he isn’t afraid to tell a story he wants telling in the way he wants to tell it. It was a beautiful film that all ages would enjoy. It was definitely delicate and moving. A great experience to be able to speak to someone so talented and so humble with it.
