S.O.S

This is the working title for my latest film The Sounds of Silence. It is inspired by the true story of the Orphanages Closure in Romania.
We shot for two weeks on two black magics and shot most of the scenes in a studio. Our establishings and exteriors are a mixture of LA, Romania and stock footage.
This was an ultra low budget feature film that was very different to any of my other films. It was a serious subject matter for a totally different demographic.
Working with Romanians also added to the fabulous experience. It felt wonderful to be a Brit shooting a foreign film in a language that l don’t speak or even understand. The scenes that were totally Romanian were scenes that made the crew cry. The words became irrelevant as it was the sentiment, the intonation and the power behind the emotion that showed us what the scene was about. Something I have never experienced before.
To tell such a powerful positive story about Romania was also unique. This film is about showing the rest of the world how Romania has changed children’s lives and how everyone else needs to follow their example.
I’m editing this film in a very unique way as not only is it a foreign language it also uses black and white to tell the memories and includes real footage and real stories.
The final icing on the cake was having props in the film that were from the actual orphanages in Romania.
Every day l would transport myself into this world where children were unloved and uncared for. l hope this film shows the world what we need to do to change this.
